Maspalomas Gay Pride : the Extravaganza is over

Maspalomas Gay Pride in Gran Canaria ended Sunday in a explosion of music and beautiful guys. We want to share with you some memories of this gay event  that shook Gran Canaria. For those who do not yet know this gay-friendly destination, Maspalomas , here is a short presentation :

Maspalomas is a town located in the southern part of the island of Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands, off the African coast. The city is located about an hour's drive from the capital Las Palmas, which has more than 300,000 inhabitants. The small town of Maspalomas is best known for its huge sandy beach with impressive dunes, sunny weather throughout the year and especially its gay pride. This year’s edition took place from May 19 to 26

Organized by GLAY, the gay and lesbian Maspalomas association, this celebration took place all over the city. But the hot spot was the Yumbo Center, the huge shopping center in the center of the city. The main stage was set on the Yumbo’s central square, ready to welcome the best drags, DJs and performers from all over Europe in a very Eurovision atmosphere. Approximately 150,000 people attended the gay pride this year.

Our team arrived on site on Friday. We were able to attend the Gala Drag Show, the election of the best Drag Queen of Gran Canaria. The gala was hosted by the "Queen" of the island and by artists like Kate Ryan, Lloyd Daniels, British X Factor finalist in 2009 and gorgeous dancers. The evening ended with a DJ session in a very festive and friendly atmosphere.

The parade through the streets of Maspalomas was held on Saturday, again in a very festive and cosmopolitan atmosphere, with people from all over Europe. Because of the heat, bodies were very quickly undressed and beautiful guys started showing some abs. In the evening, the Miss Beautiful Gay contest awarded the best transvestite, who occupied the stage of Yumbo. Again, the evening was hosted by artists, dancers and singers, including Nikki French, a former Eurovision contestant in 2004 for the United Kingdom, but also Kylie Minogue and Tina Turner high quality covers.

For the closing day of this 2014 edition, the organizaters had planned a foam afternoon party on the central square of Yumbo. The celebrations ended with an International Show, starring Cascada. We could also attend the performance of British boys band Kingsland Road, X factor winners and of British singer Sam Callahan, a handsome hunk who likes to show off !

This gay pride is really worth a visit and makes us look forward to the 2015 edition (May 8 to 17). In the meantime you can always go and visit Maspalomas and enjoy the sun and sand dunes or simply the many gay tourists who travel all year long to Maspalomas to enjoy this vibrant gay life and the large number of gay bars, saunas and gay resorts.
