Winters in gay Berlin are long, gray and dark, so when spring and summer finally come around, the city’s residents can’t wait to get their faces – and the rest of their body parts – in the sun. Despite the city not being by the sea, there are many natural and manmade beaches to discover. Indeed, a gay beach Berliners will enjoy could be a traditional beach by a lake or a manmade beach or pool in the city center. Alternatively, there are many parks dotted around this über-green city.
Sandy beaches
The Strandbad Wannsee is a gay-friendly lakeside beach where Berliners can chill and sunbathe on fine sand. The northern section is a nude area and popular with gay guys. Strandbad Müggelsee is another real beach with a nudist zone. These are the two of the biggest lakeside beaches in Berlin, but there are many more.
Urban beaches and pools
A few manmade beaches and beach bars pop up every year on the River Spree, with the LGBT community getting their very own. Throughout summer, the Gaybeach event takes place weekly. Also, the gay-friendly Badeschiff is an amazing swimming pool with manmade beach and loungers floating on top of the river. If you’re in Berlin, do not miss it!
Parks aplenty
When the gay Berlin nightlife gets to much, you can also chill in the many parks. Nudism is celebrated in Germany and it’s legal to sunbathe naked in green spaces.
The sprawling Tiergarten is Berlin’s largest park and there are several nice grassy areas for sunbathing (and also cruising). In super-cool Neukölln, the old Tempelhof airfield has been transformed into a huge urban park. Nearby Hasenheide is more enclosed, with areas for nude sunbathing and, if desired, getting more closely acquainted with the locals!
