There are numerous transportation options within Christchurch CBD.

WALK
Christchurch is an incredibly walkable city. The main CBD area has a very flat terrain, and there are all varieties of street art, eateries and shopping to be discovered along the way. Exploring on foot also means there is no need to navigate through roadworks and road closures, of which there are plenty given the massive post-earthquake rebuild effort.

CYCLING
Christchurch is a city of renewal and this forward thinking has made cycling an integral part of its public transport system. Consider signing up for a bike-sharing service where you can share a bike for as little as $4/h . Check out the Christchurch city council website for cycle maps or the Transport for Christchurch website.

CAR RENTAL
All the major car rental and campervan companies (Avis, Budget, Hertz, Europcar, Ezi, Hertz, Thrifty) are located inside the International Arrivals Hall, near the domestic baggage reclaim and provide vehicles on pre-booked or walk-up basis. Rental cars can be picked up and dropped off at Christchurch Airport.

Some other rental car operators provide a pick up and drop off transfer shuttle service to their depot for pre-booked customers. Rental car transfer courtesy shuttles are located outside the Regional Lounge (exit through Doors 1 or 2).

BUSES
The new Bus Interchange is located on the corner of Lichfield St and Colombo St, Christchurch Central. The Bus Interchange is 500 metres away (or a 6 minute walk). There are 26 bus lines servicing all of Christchurch; and all of them stop at the Bus Interchange. Departure and schedule times are clearly displayed on screens throughout the building.

Timetables and route maps can be found on the metroinfo website.

Alternatively, visit the Metroinfo Counter - Which is open 7:30am – 6pm weekdays and 9am – 5pm weekends.

TRANZALPINE
Enjoy New Zealand’s finest inland rail journey on-board the TranzAlpine. The best way to take in the South Island’s stunning mountains and the vast Canterbury Plains, the TranzAlpine runs daily departing Christchurch at 8:15 am. It stops at Greymouth for 1 hour before departing Greymouth at 2:05 pm and arriving back at Christchurch at 6:31 pm. The TranzAlpine does not run on Christmas day.

Christchurch Station is located on Troup Drive, Addington, Christchurch (13 minute drive from Christchurch CBD). It is serviced by city buses that stop approximately 300 metres from the station.

HOP ON-HOP OFF DOUBLE DECKER BUS
Hop on and off as many times as you like, while experiencing an informative insight into the effects of the earthquakes and the rebuild effort. A fun and interesting tour of the city that is 1 hour in duration, and includes the following

8 stops:
Canterbury Museum
Mona Vale
Riccarton House & Bush
Westfield Riccarton Mall
Earthquake Memorial/The Terrace
Cardboard Cathedral (closest to us)
Margaret Mahy Playground
Cathedral Square (this is the closest stop to our apartment)
Kids under 15 ride for free. Both 24 and 48 hour tickets are available with buses departing every 30 minutes.

HERITAGE TRAM
Jump onboard a beautifully restored heritage Tram to see some of Christchurch’s leading attractions. Your day-long ticket allows you to get on and off the Tram as often as many times as you like at the 17 en route stops.
Use the tram to go Punting on the Avon, and to transfer to a Christchurch Botanic Gardens Tour.

Departing from Cathedral Junction (our doorstep!), stops include the Avon River, Container Mall, Gothic-style Arts Centre, the Canterbury Museum and New Regent Street. Trams depart every 15-20 minutes.

TAXI
It is advisable that you pre-book a taxi service, particularly if you need to be somewhere by a particular time.

UBER
Uber is widely used in Christchurch, and is definitely our personal preference. Much cheaper than taxis and the opportunity to review drivers often results in a better quality service. Make sure to download the app and have it operational before you need to use it.

E-SCOOTERS
Electric scooters have been a very popular and handy means to explore downtown Christchurch for a while now, as it is flat and has enough bike lanes for safe navigating around. There are three different scooter services to choose from at the moment: Lime, Beam and Flamingo. As long as you download the right app and get yourself connected, you can cruise around town with ease (and care!)

CHRISTCHURCH AIRPORT
Christchurch International and Domestic airport is a 25 min drive from 113 Worcester Street. The distance is 11.3 km (7 miles) if you travel via Memorial Ave.

Travel time will increase during peak travel times/ roadworks so it is advisable that you factor this in when planning your trip.

In addition to travel time, allow at least 40 minutes for domestic flights and 2-3 hours for international flights when checking-in.
For more specific information regarding check-in, contact your airline directly.

BUSES

Airport to City:
Regular Metro Red Bus services connect the airport to the city centre and many other locations in Christchurch. Both the Purple Line and the Number 29 buses go via the city centre.
Both buses depart from the northern end of the International Arrivals Hall, between the terminal and the long-term car park (exit through Door 9 past the Vodafone counter).

City to Airport:
There are also very regular buses to Christchurch Airport departing from Platform C at The Bus Interchange, Christchurch Central.

You can take either the Purple Line Bus (Sumner to Airport & Sheffield Cres) or the Number 29 bus.

The Bus Interchange is located on the corner of Lichfield St and Colombo St, Christchurch Central. From 113 Worcester Street, the Bus Interchange is 500m away (or a 6 minute walk).

Travel time either way is generally 20 - 45 minutes.

You can buy your tickets from the driver. Tickets cost $8.50 one way or $15 return.
Bus timetables can be found on the metroinfo website.

SHUTTLES
Shuttles provide a door-to-door service to all parts of Christchurch and some surrounding areas using multi-passenger vans. A shuttle can be cheaper than a taxi but you will usually share the van with other passengers and the shuttle may stop at other destinations before your own.
Travel time from the city centre to the airport and vice versa is approximately 20-25 minutes, however, you should allow additional time during peak times, and for the shuttle to make stops for other passengers. Prices vary by shuttle company and you are advised to ask before beginning your journey.
The shuttle rank is located outside the International Arrivals Hall, next to the taxi rank (exit through door 7).

TAXI
Travel time from the airport to the city centre and vice versa is approximately 20-25 minutes. Prices vary by taxi company and you are advised to ask before beginning your journey. The standard fare is usually around $45-$65. Your taxi is charged $5.50 to collect or deliver you to Christchurch Airport.
The taxi rank is located outside the International Arrivals Hall.

UBER
Uber is widely used in Christchurch, and is a good option for a trip from the city to the airport. Fares are generally cheaper than a taxi, however, you will need to download the uber app to book a vehicle. It is advisable that you book an Uber ride in advance if you plan to travel very early in the morning or very late at night.
