Maui Kamaole and the surrounding community were not affected by the fires earlier in the year. Maui Kamaole is more secure, secluded, and affordable than the major hotel/resort complexes but offers similar resort amenities with close access to restaurants, beaches, shops, bars, etc. of the major resorts in Wailea. Designed by a Canadian architect from Vancouver BC and originally a Canadian development, Maui Kamaole has a bit of a European Mediterranean resort feel with paths wandering through the lush tropical landscaping connecting buildings and leading to unexpected garden settings and with the pools having a more intimate setting than larger hotel resorts. Also known as Puʻu Olai, this pocket of picturesque perfection is considered one of the best gay clothing-optional beaches in the world. Occupying a 660-foot stretch of shoreline in Makena State Park, it’s separated from Big Beach by a steep lava outcropping. It is also one of the few places in Hawaii that’s nudist-friendly.
Little Beach at Makena is a beautiful secluded beach away from all the hotels and homes with trails and forest behind the beach for a break from the sun:).
The North shore with the coastal beach town and nightlife in Paia and up country attractions is also easily accessible without the long drive required from resorts on the West side of Maui. Check local gay listings for venues on island as they may change.
