Rabin Square (Kikar Rabin) is the main square of the city of Tel Aviv and it is situated to the south of Tel Aviv’s City Hall building, on Ibn Gabirol Street. It was formerly named the "Kings of Israel Square” (Kikar Malkhey Yisrael), but in 1995 the square was re-named "Rabin Square” in honor of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin who was assassinated on site at the end of a peace rally which was held there. Throughout the years Rabin Square became the city’s main square and a place for big rallies, a tradition that is kept to these days. In this square is also a memorial sculpture commemorating the Holocaust, designed by the well-known Israeli artist Yigal Tumarkin. Rabin Square also includes the "Yad Rabin” memorial- in memory of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin- which was inaugurated on the occasion of Rabin’s first year memorial, and around which are displayed the graffiti writings left there on the night of Rabin’s assassination and following it. Rabin Square is a center for social and cultural events, ceremonies, festivities and many political rallies, and it symbolizes to many the essence of democratic values in the State of Israel.
