Kehena Black Sand

Kehena Black Sand is Hawaii's most popular clothing-optional beach. Frequented by the gay community and a resident pod of spinner dolphins, this is a great place to feel out and proud in Hawaii - in the nude! As the name would suggest, this beach is unique in the sense that it is abound in beautiful, black sand. The private location down a cliff trail ensures comfortable nudist options, and the local community is very welcoming. Most residents actually live here so they can be near the clothing optional beach, so you'll be in good, likeminded company. Dolphins often put on a delightful show jumping out of the water, spinning and diving back in. Frequently, the dolpins come close to the shore so you can swim amongst them. Monday is known locally as "Gay Day at Kehena beach". While the gay community generally goes to the beach every day, they make a point of going especially on Monday, "Gay Day". 

You can access Kehena beach via a trail towards the ocean from Highway 137 (the red road) also known a Kalapana - Kapoho Beach Road near the 18 mile marker. Look for the pull-off parking area on the ocean side of the road. All trails toward the ocean converge to a single, well-marked trail down to the beach. Gay beachgoers tend to hang out at the far end of the beach. Sunrise over the ocean is awesome, and the sun generally goes beyond the cliff around 3pm. The beach still remains light and beautiful, but no direct sun for tanning. That said, there are several large trees at this gay beach if you would prefer some shade. And as for some refreshments, you'll find many vendors often selling coconuts at the top of the trail.
