For over a century, gay saunas and bathhouses have been more than wellness venues - they're community spaces. Long before gay bars existed, they were among the rare places where gay and bisexual men could relax, socialise, and feel entirely themselves. Today they remain woven into LGBTQ+ travel culture, from the legendary Boiler in Berlin to the historic men's clubs of New York and the buzzing sauna circuits of Paris and Barcelona.
misterb&b covers gay saunas and bathhouses in more than 337 cities worldwide - across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and beyond. Whether you're visiting one for the first time or you're a regular, this guide will help you find the right venue and book LGBTQ+-friendly accommodation nearby. 🏳️🌈

The strength of France in this ranking reflects a deep regional sauna tradition that extends far beyond Paris - into Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Nice, Strasbourg, Nantes, Montpellier, and dozens of smaller cities each with their own established venue.
What Is a Gay Bathhouse?
A gay bathhouse - also called a gay sauna or men's spa - is a private, men-only club designed for gay and bisexual men. Facilities typically include a Finnish dry sauna, a steam room (hammam), a jacuzzi, private cabins, lounge areas, and in larger venues a swimming pool, gym, and bar.
Some venues lean toward wellness and relaxation; others have well-known cruising areas. Entry usually works on a day-pass or membership model: you pay at the door, get a locker and a towel, and have access to all facilities for the duration of your visit.
The terminology varies by region. Gay sauna dominates in Europe, Latin America, and most of Asia. Bathhouse or men's club is more common in North America. Men's spa is sometimes used in the US. In practice, these terms are interchangeable.
Gay bathhouses have been part of LGBTQ+ history for over a century - they served as some of the only safe, judgement-free spaces for gay men long before gay bars and clubs existed. First-timers are welcome at virtually every venue: the culture is built around inclusion.
Gay Bathhouses in the United States
The US gay bathhouse scene is smaller today than it was at its 1970s peak. The AIDS crisis of the 1980s led several cities - most famously San Francisco (1984) and New York State (1985) - to legally close or heavily restrict bathhouses. San Francisco only re-legalised traditional bathhouses in 2020 after 36 years of restrictions. The result is a US scene more concentrated in a handful of major cities, often complemented by sex clubs and cruising bars.
New York has just one remaining traditional gay bathhouse: the long-running East Side Club in Midtown East. The West Side Club closed permanently in 2022. The city's wider scene runs through bars, clubs, and circuit parties in Hell's Kitchen, Chelsea, and the West Village.
Vegas has some of the country's most well-equipped men's clubs, including 24/7 venues that align well with the city's round-the-clock pace. A natural stop for LGBTQ+ visitors.
Chicago has one remaining gay bathhouse: Steamworks Chicago in Boystown - a 24/7 multi-floor venue and one of the most established men-only spaces in the Midwest.
Following the 2020 reform, the SoMa neighbourhood is again home to active venues, complemented by some of the world's most famous leather and kink events (Folsom Street Fair, Up Your Alley).
LA's scene spreads from North Hollywood to West Hollywood, with venues catering to a range of crowds from wellness-focused to more social environments.
Miami has a small but lively scene, including Club Aqua and the sauna at Hotel Gaythering in South Beach. Nearby Fort Lauderdale has a notably larger bathhouse scene.
Other US cities with a documented sauna or cruising scene: Atlanta, Boston, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, San Diego, Seattle, Washington DC.
Gay Saunas in Europe
Europe is where contemporary gay sauna culture is at its most active. Several countries - France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, the UK, and Belgium - have well-developed circuits with venues in nearly every major city. Many European saunas operate 24/7 or with extended weekend hours.
France
France leads the misterb&b directory with 88 cities covered. The scene is unusually deep - most mid-sized French cities have at least one gay sauna.
Gay Sauna Paris - Paris has one of the largest sauna scenes in Europe, with venues spread across multiple neighbourhoods. Sun City sits closest to the Marais on Boulevard de Sébastopol; IDM near the Grands Boulevards; Key West (fully redesigned in 2025) near Gare du Nord; King Sauna in the 17th near Batignolles; Les Bains d'Odessa on the Left Bank near Montparnasse; and Le Riad in the eastern 20th, near Pyrénées. The Marais itself has cruising clubs and sex venues, but the saunas are mostly elsewhere.
Gay Sauna Lyon - Lyon's scene contracted after the closure of Sun Lyon in 2022, but two gay saunas remain: Double Side in the gay district (open daily) and Oasis Club, a mixed venue with men-only days.
Other French cities with established gay saunas: Marseille, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Nice, Strasbourg, Nantes, Montpellier, Lille.
Germany
Germany has 29 cities covered. Despite Berlin's global reputation as a queer capital, the German gay sauna scene is most diverse outside of Berlin.
Gay Sauna Berlin - Berlin currently has only one dedicated gay sauna: Der Boiler, located on Mehringdamm in Kreuzberg (not Schöneberg, despite Schöneberg being Berlin's historic gay district). It's a large, three-floor institution and one of the most internationally recognised gay saunas in Europe. The wider city scene is built more around cruising bars, sex clubs (notably Lab.Oratory beneath Berghain), and fetish events like Folsom Europe.
Gay Sauna Hamburg - Hamburg has 4 gay saunas, more than any other German city, anchored in the St. Georg gay district.
Other German cities with active scenes: Cologne, Frankfurt, Munich, Dusseldorf.
Spain
Gay Sauna Madrid - Madrid has one of the largest gay sauna scenes in Europe, with multiple venues spread across the Chueca and Lavapies districts.
Gay Sauna Barcelona - Barcelona has 4 gay saunas, all clustered in or around the Eixample (Gaixample) district: Sauna Casanova (the busiest), Sauna Thermas (the largest in Spain at ~950-1400 m2), Sauna Bruc, and Sauna Condal.
United Kingdom
Gay Sauna London - London's saunas are spread across multiple neighbourhoods. Sweatbox is in Soho (busiest in central London); Pleasuredrome in Waterloo (24/7); The Locker Room near Covent Garden; E15 Club in Stratford. Vauxhall is more associated with cruising clubs and after-hours venues than traditional saunas.
Gay Sauna Manchester - Basement Complex in Ancoats is Manchester's flagship men-only sauna, in operation for over 20 years; H2O is closer to the Canal Street Gay Village.
Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, Austria
Gay Sauna Amsterdam - Despite Amsterdam's reputation, the city has just one dedicated gay sauna: Sauna Nieuwezijds, a full wellness complex in the historic centre near Dam Square. The wider adult scene runs through leather bars on Warmoesstraat and cruising clubs in the red-light district.
Gay Sauna Brussels - Brussels has one major gay sauna: Sauna Macho, open since 1983, near the Grand Place. It runs non-stop from Friday noon through Sunday midnight - one of the few European saunas to do so - and is busiest the morning after each La Démence party.
Gay Sauna Lisbon - Lisbon's standout is Trombeta Bath in Bairro Alto, regularly cited as one of southern Europe's finest gay saunas. Open 35 hours non-stop from Friday noon to Monday morning.
Gay Sauna Vienna - Vienna's scene is small but historically rich. Kaiserbründl dates to the 19th century and is one of the most beautiful gay saunas in Europe architecturally - Habsburg-era tilework, vaulted ceilings, and a rooftop terrace.

Gay Sauna Etiquette: What to Know Before You Go
First-timers are welcome at every gay sauna. Here's what to expect.
Entry. Most gay bathhouses operate on a day-pass model - typically $15-$30 in the US, EUR 10-22 in Europe. Bring a valid photo ID. Some venues are technically members-only but admit non-members for a small additional fee at the door.
What's provided. A locker, a towel, and a key are standard. Flip-flops are sometimes provided, sometimes recommended to bring. Most venues prohibit phones and cameras inside - this is a privacy rule that applies to everyone.
Consent. This is the non-negotiable rule, in every venue, everywhere in the world. A clear no is always a no. Respect personal space, follow the rules posted at the entrance, and remember that staff are on premises and approachable.
Atmosphere. The vibe varies enormously. Some saunas are full social clubs with bars, lounges, and themed nights; others are quieter wellness spaces. Cruising areas, where present, are usually separate from the social and wellness zones. Check the venue's misterb&b city page before you go.
