As the eighth largest city in the USA, San Diego has a dynamic nightlife, and its gay scene is no exception to the rule. The main gay area of San Diego can be found in the charming Hillcrest district. Every year in July, Hillcrest is home to San Diego Gay Pride, which is one of the largest and most celebrated gay pride events in the States. Even when Pride is not taking place, the area still hums with a colorful and welcoming energy.
Hillcrest is located just north of San Diego’s downtown and offers a wealth of gay bars, restaurants, shops, and clubs. The area is known for its pedestrian streets, open attitude, and main thoroughfares of University Avenue, Normal Street, and Harvey Milk Street. Be sure to stop by Baja Betty's for a bite to eat and a seriously good - and large - cocktail. This place has become a bit of an institution in the area and is popular on a Saturday afternoon when gays flock to the outside terrace to people-watch. PECS is also a popular hangout hosting regular parties and Drag Race viewing nights.
San Diego is an open-minded city with more than one gay district. While Hillcrest is the main pulse, gay life can also be found in South Park and Ocean Beach, which offer various LGBTQ-owned and run businesses. The Gaslamp Quarter is also famous for those looking for a more alternative gay scene in San Diego.
