What a year! As we reach the end of 2022 and start thinking about new adventures, it's also a good time to look back on the year that was. Sure there were some definite lows, but there were also many great highs, particularly for the LGBTQ+ community. Same-sex marriage was legalized and conversion therapy banned in several more countries, LGBTQ+ representation was high in the Winter Olympics, an exciting new vaccine kicked off, and so much more. So this December, take a walk down memory lane with us and let's celebrate our community's great achievements with our 2022 wrapped.
1) History was made on May 5 with the opening of the UK's very first LGBTQ+ museum. Queer Britain is located in King's Cross, London, and covers over 100 years of queer life through art, installations, and more.
2) 36 LGBTQ+ athletes from 14 different countries participated in the Winter Olympics. This was a great chance for LGBTQ+ representation in sports, and we can't wait to see more.
3) Norway announces a gender-neutral pronoun "hen" along with its existing masculine and feminine pronouns on January 31.
4) The Prime Minister of Singapore decriminalizes sexual relations between men on August 21, paving the way for a more open and accepting society.
5) Mexico delivers its first non-binary birth certificate on February 11 and allows same-sex marriage on October 26. Way to go!
6) Moderna announces its trials of a vaccine against HIV on Jan 27.
7) Poland abandons Anti-LGBTQ+ Zones on June 28.
8) Conversion therapy is banned in France, New Zealand, Israel, and Greece. We're looking forward to seeing which countries follow suit next year.
9) Marvel comics presents Web Weaver, the first gay version of Spider-Man, in its comic, Edge of Spider Verse #5.
10) In Canada, iconic drag queen Barbada de Barbades debuts with her children's show Barbara on March 29. We loved it!
So there you have it! 2022 was an interesting and successful year for our community, and we're looking forward to achieving more great things in 2023. Through solidarity, resilience, and pride, let's continue to experience a more welcoming world together.
