Melbourne: Why I chose to host in the city I love

Mark extensively traveled the world in his 20s. So he knows perfectly what it means to look for a home away from home: that's what encouraged him to become a host in Melbourne. Opening your home to the global gay community with misterb&b is his own way of experiencing different cultures now that he has taken the decision to put down some roots in Melbourne. And what better time to visit Melbourne than now; the city is celebrating its annual Pride, Midsumma! 

What does hosting for the gay community mean to you and why did you become a host?

I enjoy meeting new people, and I traveled a lot in my 20's. It’s a great opportunity to meet new and interesting people and show them around in Melbourne.

Tell us about some interesting people you have met through misterb&b

I've only hosted a handful of guests but they have all been very friendly and engaging. I think everyone is interesting and unique in their own way.

In your opinion what attracts guests to your city

I think it's the fact we are so far away, and that there is fauna and flora that can’t be seen anywhere else in the world. Australians also have a reputation for being friendly, fun people.

Do you feel more involved with the LGBTQ community since you started hosting?

I was an activist in my 20's, now not so much, but hosting for misterb&b does make you feel more engaged with the community both locally and globally.

Meeting new people from around the world, company for those living on their own, and the chance to share memorable experiences.

Why should a guest stay with you ?

My apartment is an old Art Deco building, furnished with original 70s antiques. It has a very quirky style that makes it a fun space to be in. I'm close to transport, and within walking distance of the CBD and key locations like Chapel Street and the beach. I'm really relaxed and easy to get along with, and I do my best to accommodate the needs of my guests so their stay is as enjoyable as possible. ●
