If you're gay in the United States, you're better off living in Santa Fe than in New York. Surprising as it may seem, this is what emerges from a ranking published in the latest issue of The Advocate magazine.
The American gay bi-monthly magazine has established its list of the 15 "gayest" cities in the United States, according to various completely subjective, even zany criteria. For each city, The Advocate measured, for example, the number of openly gay politicians, the number of people registered on the dating site Gay.com, the number of gay or gay-friendly religious congregations, or the number of times the lesbian folk band Tegan and Sara performed. If these criteria are far from scientific, they at least have the merit of being funny - and finally quite close to reality. The goal is, according to the magazine, to establish the list of places where "gays live, love, vote and create communities".
And against all odds, it's not New York, San Francisco or even Miami, cities known worldwide for being particularly welcoming to the gay community, that top the list. While Miami ranks last, San Francisco has to settle for 11th place. As for New York, it is completely absent from the list!
The Advocate ranks Las Vegas as the 3rd gayest city in the US
But then, which are the gayest American cities? Minneapolis (photo), in Minnesota, takes the lead, followed by Santa Fe (New Mexico) and Las Vegas (Nevada). All cities of the Wild West! Minneapolis is praised for allowing gay pastors to officiate in the Evangelical Church. Santa Fe, on the other hand, is home to one of the largest American retirement homes exclusively for the LGBT community, according to The Advocate. Finally, the magazine notes that Las Vegas has dozens of shows, each more extravagant (and gay) than the last. The city known as Sin City is also the second most visited city in the United States by the gay community - after New York. Phew, the honor of the Big Apple is safe
