Discover tranquility in Santa Catarina Palopó on Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. Enjoy mountain air, stunning views, and a charming lakeside village. Two minutes away, find natural hot springs for relaxation in picturesque surroundings. Stroll along the shores, soaking in cultural richness. Explore vibrant colors and cultural heritage, making Santa Catarina Palopó a captivating destination in the heart of Guatemala.
Casa Verapaz is a large property, about a football field size. One of the biggest draws to this place is its location: 5 minute walk to the center of Santa Catarina Palopó village, 15 minute drive from Panajachel with parking directly from the road, and lake-front access to Lake Atitlan (2 minute walk to the hot springs).
Casa Verapaz has three modern apartments with all the amenities to have a tranquil and/or romantic time. The property also has a pool (not heated) and a large garden with lots of privacy. Both of these are shared with other guests. On one side of the property we are remodeling our main house. We also adopted a family of four dogs who have their own gated section of the garden where they live a happy life. They won’t bother you, but you can go say hello to them if you like.
The Apartments
Apartment B (This listing)
This apartment with X meters in size on the second floor. It’s a one-bedroom with 3 meter high ceilings. This apartment has beautiful views from its balcony of two inactive volcanoes across the lake (Toliman and Atitlan volcanoes). You can usually have clear views early in the morning to take nice photos.
Apartment C (different listing)
This is a one bedroom apartment with a loft. It also has spectacular views. If interested in this one, please find the listing in my profile.
Apartment A (off limits)
This is our family’s apartment that we stay in when we come to the lake. This apartment has cameras installed outside for security.
We appreciate privacy for everyone
We have security cameras onsite in public areas (road entrance, lake entrance and outside stairs). We also have cameras in our family apartment A and the main house remodel area. Please note that none of the apartments have cameras pointing to them. Your privacy is our utmost priority.
We welcome children
As Casa Verapaz is quite large, we do ask that a responsible adult supervise children in the gardens and especially the pool area. Our pool is quite deep as the previous owner built it to do laps every morning.
We welcome dogs
Lastly, we allow a well behaved dog if you need to bring him/her along. We are well traveled and sometimes travel with our Golden Retriever, Günchen. You will also see our cat, Ichimei, hanging out in the gardens. Our parrot, Paco, who is 23 years old. And of course the family of dogs we adopted (Luna, Julinho, Willy, and Moniquita).
We welcome diversity
Guatemala is a conservative country, but we have traveled all over the world and welcome guests from all walks of life. Please let us know beforehand if you have any unique needs and we will try our best to support you.

Any questions, please send a message via the ******** messaging app. Our Co-host (William) or Host (Julio) will coordinate with the staff onsite.
The village (Santa Catarina Palopó)
As the village is quite small. It’s very laid back and relaxing. A great place to plan little trips to other villages and also enjoy a wonderful relaxing time. Please note that we don’t have ATMs in our village, so bring ******** if you want to buy any souvenirs in the village or pay ******** for any services.
The staff on the property
Alfonso, with 20+ years of property experience, manages gardening and maintenance from 8 am to 5 pm (Mon-Fri). He's available all day for assistance, preferring Spanish or Mayan. For concerns, message us on ********; we'll coordinate help. Rony, our main contractor, stays below the parking area. Onsite Mon-Fri, he's available for questions, communicating in Spanish or Mayan only. Please use the ******** messaging app for any off-hours questions or needs.
The apartment
You will have all the basic necessities to have an amazing time in Casa Verapaz. The apartment is equipped with the comforts of a nice hotel but it includes a full functioning kitchen.
The kitchen
It has pots, pans, cleaning tools, plates, cutlery. There is a big jug of potable water "Salvavidas." If you run out of water, please ask Alfonso, and he can get you a new jug. We also provide basic things to cook like salt, sugar, coffee, olive oil and tea. We have a toaster, microwave, electric water heater, coffee maker, oven, fridge and stove. You have pots and pans.
We have a small vegetable garden. Ask Alfonso what we have available and you get some for free. Last year we had tons of passion fruits. Lastly, we have a gas grill outside that you can use. Please note that this is a shared grill with other guests. Ask Alfonso to plan accordingly.
The sleeping quarters
The bedrooms have all the comfort of a nice hotel. Evenings can get chilly, we have thicker blankets for your comfort. The living room has a queen size sofa bed as well. For babies/toddler, we have a small crib we can make available. We provide clean linen and towels for showers. For the pool we have special towels, please ask Alfonso if you are using the pool and how many towels you will need.
The bathrooms
The bathrooms have all the basic needs like shampoo, body soap and hand soap. You are welcome to bring your specific toiletries. We provide toilet paper during your stay.
The food (Important message!)
We highly recommend you buy all the food you want to cook during your stay before you come to our village as we only have small stores and not much selection. Panajachel has both convenient stores, La Torre and La Despensa, where you can get lots of food in both of these.
If you want fresh produce, we highly recommend the open market in Panajachel. It’s actually quite a fun experience to buy fresh vegetables from there. Lots of variety and freshness.
The laundry (optional)
We do have both a washer and dryer onsite. Please ask Alfonso if you need to use it. This is an optional service and it’s 60 quetzales per load.
The internet
We have tested several services over the years as we have worked from home a lot. We landed on a satellite service, not Starlink, but another one. It’s quite fast and
