About the Place Initially in English, this text was translated via a machine translation service and may contain inaccuracies or errors.
We're a group of queer environmental scientists and artists who cooperatively maintain this little cottage above a wild lake in a biological rich part of the Gulf Islands between Victoria and Vancouver BC -- and enjoying sharing this space for these particular (clothing optional) uses: hiking, climbing, bicycling (mountain and road), paddle boarding (one extra available), swimming, and ecological and artistic research. We can fit up to three visitors at a time -- who bring their own sleeping bags and other bedding (!!!). Close quarters. Small kitchen and shared meals. Shower and lots of hot water.
travel:
We are a windy road from the Fulford Harbour ferry that connects to Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island (and the big ferry to Vancouver and the bus to Victoria). Most people come with either an auto or bicycle though some folks like to walk and in the summer there is a little public bus connecting Fulford with Ruckle Provincial Park. The $$$ from guests helps us pay for our own research and high quality utilities (stellar fibre optic broadband).
KEXMIN field station is above a wild, clean and clothing optional lake. The cottage is used by a group of gay men who share this cottage for environmental research, creative retreats, recreation, nudity, and small parties. We are part of a diverse circle of scientists, researchers, and artists most of whom are queer, multicultural, and indigenous. Some of us have centuries long family histories in these border lands, islands, and seas. Ages of visitors to this little field station have spanned late teens to people over 80.
The cottage facilities include one large room on three levels with sky-lights and a wood stove (very romantic in the winter with a fire). There is a small kitchen for shared meals and a basic bathroom with a shower and plenty of hot water. GUESTS AT THIS FIELD STATION RECEIVE THREE SHARED, VEGETARIAN MEALS PER DAY WITH MOST OF THE INGREDIENTS LOCALLY GROWN AND MADE.
Through a fibre optic cable, there is exceptional, broad-band internet and a wireless router including for G5 for mobile telephones connections to the internet. And there is a telephone for making short telephone calls at no charge. In the warm months, the gardens on either side of the cottage allow nudity and sunbathing.
THIS IS A SHARED DORM-LIKE SPACE AND GUESTS BRING THEIR OWN SLEEPING BAGS AND PADS often sleeping outside in the warmer weather.
KEXMIN field station is a small centre for research and learning centred on conversations spanning traditional indigenous knowledge and contemporary science for environmental planning, ecological design, public art and other forms of contemporary cultural production with a focus on the Salish Sea and its Gulf and San Juan Islands between the mainland of the North American West Coast and Vancouver Island.
