X marks this hidden and gorgeous spot. Try holidaying off grid!
Even though XSPOT is in plain view, right on top of a cliff, it's also a hidden gem. In its isolated location, it offers solitude and space for relaxation. The architecturally designed apartment is modern and light and has 270 degree views over the Hauraki Gulf.
It's a great place to unwind, but also a perfect base to explore Aotea Great Barrier Island. And the island's proximity to Auckland makes this an easy getaway. We're inviting you to XSPOT bliss!
Travel to Aotea Great Barrier Island
XSPOT offers peace and quiet, a scenic half hour flight with Barrier Air from Auckland or North Shore Airport, or a four and a half hour cruise by Sealink ferry from Wynyard Wharf in downtown Auckland.
Finding XSPOT
Once you have landed on Great Barrier Island, either in Tryphena or in Claris, a 4WD car will get you to 421 Schooner Bay Rd, Tryphena in around half an hour. Bring your own car on the ferry, or book one well in advance from one of our local rental car companies. We are looking forward to welcoming you on the day.
Cliff top design
XSPOT is an off-grid clifftop holiday apartment - modern accommodation for two. Spacious, light and passive solar with plenty of room to unwind, away from every day distractions. Being off grid, you will have to limit your power use, but there is a fridge freezer and using laptops and charging phones is perfectly fine. There is also cell phone coverage for both NZ phone networks at the apartment.
Best feature - The view
There's a well-equipped open plan kitchen, but our guests claim that its best feature are the fantastic close-up views over the Hauraki Gulf. Waves are breaking just hundred meters below... This spot has the widest sunset views and amongst the starriest nights in this Dark Sky Sanctuary!
Find tranquility
XSPOT is away from the hustle and bustle of Tryphena and Medlands in the summer. At eight kilometers from the nearest settlement, Tryphena, XSPOT is secluded and quiet, even by island standards. The apartment is effortlessly beautiful and comfortable. It's a real (re)treat.
Aotea Great Barrier Island
If you are after sparkly dark skies, beautiful beaches, flourishing flora and endangered fauna, amazing arts and crafts, wonderful walks or a combination of the above, we think there is nothing that beats Aotea. Find some of our best tips here.
Onsite hosts
Hilde and Roger, your onsite hosts are on standby right next door, to assist with off grid systems and island tips. Having hosts onsite means you can make the most of your island time. Use us! Chat to us on your way to/from your car. We love to hear how you are getting on. Apart from a quick chat when we are around, you won't see us, unless we spot dolphins or a whale. In which case we will give you a shout.
Enquire or book
Please do not hesitate to send us an enquiry. We'd love to hear from you! And we are very happy to give you a special rate for direct bookings of 5 nights or more, especially in our low season, from June - September. Email: orange.********
Vouchers
Do you have a loved one with a birthday, a wedding or an anniversary? We can assist if you'd like to buy a gift voucher or the perfect wedding present: a honeymoon at XSPOT!
We are looking forward to receiving your enquiry.

There are no specific LGBTQ+ venues or scene on Great Barrier Island that we are aware of. The main attractions on the island are natural: stunning secluded beaches, thermal hot pools, fantastic look out points and amazing walks as well as a few lovely galleries and an amazingly dark sky, which is fantastic for (guided?) stargazing.

Property Rules Initially in English, this text was translated via a machine translation service and may contain inaccuracies or errors.
Welcome to XSPOT!
XSPOT is off grid. Even though it looks like a ‘normal’ apartment (attached to our house). It’s not. Here’s some extra info you need to know before your arrival.
Great Barrier Island is an island sanctuary. With only 1200 people, there are just a few grocery stores, two cafes, a few restaurants and no ATMs. Most shops/outlets will accept EFTPOS/cards but bring some ********.
The island is a Dark Sky Sanctuary, so no street lights. As land marks are not so visible after dark, arrival before dark is recommended.
Check-in and check-out - Check-in after 2pm and check-out before 11am. Early check-in/late check-out may be possible. Please check with Hilde before arrival.
XSPOT is situated at the end of a long, steep, unsealed driveway. From Schooner Bay, most of the road is unsealed. A 4WD car is required. Please park in the designated visitors park close to the house, allowing garage access.
Solar power - There is no mains electricity on the island and every household creates it’s own power. XSPOT’s solar system is not powerful for appliances with heating elements, so please leave hairdryers -straighteners and rice cookers at home as they can crash the system and we are all out of power.
There is sufficient power to run a fridge freezer, to charge phones, laptops and tablets. If there has been little sun over your stay use power more sparingly. Use one light per person and turn lights off when you leave a room. Cooking is on gas or on the woodstove if you prefer, in winter.
Water - In prolonged periods of drought, be mindful of your water use. Please use the filter tap on the bench for drinking water. This is double-filtered and 99.9% safe to drink. Buy bottle water if you are unsure. Our creek water contains a lot of iron. This stains the toilet bowl.
Hot Water - Hot water is heated by the sun through our roof top solar panels or by a wetback wood stove. Firewood is supplied.
Linen - Bedlinen and towels are supplied. The dark towels are suitable for beach/hot pools.
Basic supplies - Basic supplies such as teas, coffee, herbs and spices, oil and vinegar, pepper and salt are provided. Please help yourself, and leave any empty packaging out for replacement.
Cooking
BBQ: We provide a gas BBQ on request. Please clean it after use. Gas stove: Please let us know if your bottle runs empty. We usually have a spare one on hand.
Phone / Internet: There is ******** cell phone coverage on site for calls and internet.
Zero Waste - Please use the bins provided to separate rubbish and food scraps. There are no public bins on the island. Please bring any waste you may have back to the XSPOT bin. Feel free to burn paper and cardboard in the woodstove or leave it in the basket by the stove
A refillable bottle is provided for beer/kombucha from The Rocks Bottleshop, My Fat Puku, or Aotea Brewing Company at Mason Road.
Onward travel –Great Barrier Island is an isolated place. In incumbent weather, flight and ferry services to the mainland may be delayed or cancelled. Please consider this when organising onward travel plans and travel insurance. If your flight is cancelled/delayed to the next day, please return to the XSPOT in your original rental car.
Island info - Available at XSPOT. If in doubt, ask/email Hilde
