The region was, in Portuguese colonial times, a major producer of sugar and housed extensive cattle ranches. It remains relatively isolated, with extensive well-preserved native mangroves, nurseries for marine life. Neighboring communities live mainly from fishing and agriculture.
The region's climate offers mild temperatures even in summer, with sun and heat during the day and less hot nights than in other parts of the coast of Bahia. Winter is rainy, but it also offers beach days.
Far enough from Salvador, but still quite close, Araripe remains an unpolluted corner of the coast, free of oil.
