If you’re looking for a cosy space to retreat to after roaming the south Devon countryside and coastline, hunker down in the Stables. Nestled in three acres of gardens on a former 15th-century farm, this charming apartment is perfect for a small family or couple. Sleeping four people in two bedrooms, snuggle up by the wood burner in winter or soak up the sun outside in summer. If you can tear yourself away, you’re just minutes from Dartmoor, Ashburton and the bustling seaside towns of Torbay. Pets welcome.
Once home to hard-working farm animals, now a comfortable self-catering retreat for four, this quiet getaway is just the ticket for a family of four or a couple looking for a breath of fresh air. A suntrap garden, woodland, stream and ponds, and not a soul to disturb apart from the birds, reign in the summer months. In winter, plush sofas and the woodburner offer a snug retreat from the elements.
Ancient country charm meets 21st-century styling at the Stables. Ease off your boots at the front door and amble into a welcoming living area, brimming with warm, cosy textures and hues reminiscent of a sunny morning. Cook up everything from hearty breakfasts to light suppers in the well-equipped shaker-style kitchen.
With verdant views over rambling gardens, The Stables’ king-size bedroom is as serene as it is stylish. Warm neutrals and cosy curtains create a comforting nook to enjoy a restful night’s sleep. Children will adore the cute bunk beds in the second bedroom. The large family bathroom with walk-in shower is the perfect place to wash away the day’s coastal and rural adventures.
The Stables is single-level accommodation with a standard-width front door with a few steps upto the accommodation from the ground access. Fresh Escapes will provide access details to the property 48 hours before your check-in time. Guests have exclusive use of the entire apartment.
Newton Abbot, a historic market town close to Devon’s English Riviera, is surrounded by glorious countryside and is a great base for anyone who wants to explore both Dartmoor National Park and a collection of lively seaside towns and beaches.
If you like shopping, Newton Abbot is a great place to visit. The town’s tradition of local markets dates back to the 13th century and there are regular outdoor and indoor markets, selling everything from books and crafts and trash and treasure to farmers’ produce, giving you the chance to sample some of the locally made and grown foods.
The town centre is also home to a variety of pubs and restaurants serving locally sourced food and drink. A train station connects you to nearby towns, villages and beaches.
What to do
THE RACECOURSE
Even if you are not a regular race goer, you may enjoy an exciting day out at Newton Abbot Racecourse, where you can watch the racing throughout the summer months.
What to see
ST LEONARDS TOWER
The best-known landmark in Newton Abbot is the medieval St Leonard's Tower, also known as The Clock Tower. It used to be part of a chapel and was built in the 13th century, forming a centerpiece to the town.
Where to walk
DECOY COUNTRY PARK
Set in beautiful countryside on the edge of Newton Abbot, Decoy Country Park provides walking, wildlife, duck feeding, picnics, a lake and pond plus a Discovery Centre.
There’s parking for one car.
The property is found at the end of a long private drive set amongst rolling Devon farmland. Although very quiet and private, it’s just five minutes from the A38 expressway and half-way between the cities of Exeter and Plymouth.
The quiet tranquillity of the location belies its easy access to explore Devon. From roaming the wilds of Dartmoor to the bustling seaside towns of Torbay, the Stables is within easy reach of the nearby must-see sights.
The delightful, historic town of Ashburton is just 10 minutes’ drive away and is the gateway to Dartmoor, with its extensive moorland walks, rock climbing, cycling and pony trekking. A 20-minute road trip, or a little longer via steam railway, gives access to equally fascinating Totnes, offering the opportunity of river trips to Dartmouth. The South Devon coast with its many different beaches and towns is about a half an hour’s drive.
The gardens are accessible to guests, but the flowerbeds and terraces adjacent to the main house are private. No loud music is to be played outside. Waste bags should be left in the parking area on Monday evenings, ready for collection the following morning.
