Kehena Black Sand Beach

Kehena black sand beach is Hawaii's most popular clothing optional beach, frequented by the gay community. Kehena beach’s private location down a cliff trail ensures a comfortable nudist option. Locals are very welcoming and most residents live here to be near the clothing optional beach. It’s a beautiful black sand beach with ample shade. Sunrise over the ocean is awesome. The sun goes beyond the cliff at about 3pm, with no direct sun for tanning. Beware: no lifeguard towers.

To access Kehena beach, use the trail toward the ocean from Highway 137 (the red road) also known as “Kalapana - Kapoho Beach Road” near the 18 mile marker. Look for the pull-off parking area on the ocean side of the road. All trails toward the ocean converge to a single, well marked trail down to the beach. Vendors often sell coconuts at the top of the trail. Gay beachgoers tend to hang out at the far end of the beach. 

Sunday can be crowded with drumming circles and a gay or gay friendly hippie crowd. You’ll find gay beachgoers every day, but hey make a point of going on Mondays, known locally as "Gay Day at Kehena beach".

Kehena beach also hosts a pod of spinner dolphins that often put on a delightful show jumping out of the water, spinning and diving back in. They frequently come close to the shore so you can swim amongst them.
