Luna de Miel, nestled in the hills of Pacific Heights above Potrero, is a 4-bedroom home with an infinity pool and stunning ocean views.
Located just below the mountaintop El Castillo, every room in Luna de Miel (meaning “honeymoon”) has jaw-dropping views of Costa Rica’s expansive skies, magical mountains, and never-ending Pacific coastline dotted with tiny islands.
The house is newly-built and we welcome any feedback on your experiences.
There are four spacious bedrooms, each with its own sliding-glass door leading to an infinity pool that drops into a breathtaking 180° view of the Pacific. Each bedroom has custom-made furniture, its own spacious en-suite bathroom and two entrances, one leading to the garden with a mountain view and the other to the pool with an ocean view.
The Pink Room and Green Room both have king-sized beds hand-made from locally-sourced teak, custom-built cabinetry with spacious closets, and an en-suite bathroom with shower. Each room can be accessed via a sliding-glass door that opens to the pool and ocean view or via a teak door that opens to the garden and mountain view. Both have a work space custom built into the cabinetry with a rattan work chair.
The Blue Room sleeps 5 comfortably, with a custom queen-sized bed and three custom European extra-long twin beds. All the beds are made from locally sourced teak. The room also has custom-built cabinetry with spacious closets, and an en-suite bathroom with shower. The room can be accessed via a sliding-glass door that opens to the pool and ocean view or via a teak door that opens to the garden and mountain view.
The Principal Bedroom has a custom king-sized bed made of locally-sourced teak, an en-suite bathroom with an indoor-outdoor shower offering unrestricted views of the mountain, garden, and ocean, as well as an outdoor tub, and a sliding-glass door that opens to an oceanview, and a teak door that opens to the garden and mountain view. The room also has custom-built cabinetry with spacious closets.
Each bedroom is a separate independent unit, accessible through a covered and protected outdoor hallway on the mountainside of the house or from the patio area through the sliding-glass doors. In all four bedrooms, there are spacious en-suite bathrooms complete with custom cabinetry, sink, toilet, and shower. There is also a powder room with sink and toilet located in the living room.
All bedrooms are equipped with air conditioning for instant cooling, and with fans for those who prefer the sea breeze. The house is outfitted with Wi-Fi, but internet connectivity on the mountain can be spotty. Internet connectivity is strongest in the living room, where a 55-inch smart TV is located.
Designed for outdoor and indoor living
The house is an homage to indoor-outdoor living with tall ceilings and sliding-glass doors that all open to an expansive living canvas of mountains, coastline, valleys and sky. The living room furniture is tropical modern, with a dreamy sectional sofa, matching lounge chairs and a designer coffee table. The room is designed with a theater of lighting, outfitted with dimmable spotlights to set the mood and a modern Wabi Sabi pendant light installation imported from an artisan in Vietnam. The kitchen has elegant and functional cabinetry and continuous windows revealing fresh ocean views.
The house is newly constructed and seamlessly blends the tropical ultra-modern with the functional. The rooms are designed to maximize endless views, clean lines and minimalist sensibilities. Home to the family’s collection of rare Haitian and Papua New Guinean painting and sculpture, the art simultaneously nods to modern, tropical and indigenous living.
The kitchen has built-in custom cabinetry and an island with four bar stools for morning coffees, juices and breakfast. All appliances are brand new and up to American or European codes and standards, with a Frigidaire fridge and dishwasher and Whirlpool washer and dryer. We turned to the experts for the latest in cooking technology, with an Italian stove, oven and microwave.
The main dining area is in a protected outdoor space with full ceiling coverage and unobstructed views of the Pacific coast. The table itself is a large and expandable metal outdoor table that can comfortably seat 12.
Terrace and pool
The terrace has an extra large sectional couch that can seat more than 10 guests, a coffee table and two lightweight outdoor seats. The couch and coffee table were custom-made for the house from locally-sourced teak. There is an outdoor kitchen area with a BBQ grill, sink and cabinetry. There are 4 lounge chairs surrounding the infinity pool.
The house has one level and does not share a space with neighbors or a caretaker, maximizing privacy and the feel of a coastal retreat.
The house has a large private infinity pool that gradually deepens to six feet and drops into the coastline view, making you feel as if you are swimming on top of the world. There’s also a unique outdoor tub for luxuriating al fresco.
Luna de Miel offers sky-high ocean views because it is located toward the top of a mountain, so guests are strongly encouraged to rent an SUV or 4x4, as the steep road is a mix of dirt and pavement.
As the house is designed for indoor-outdoor living, expect to hear and see Costa Rican wildlife, including singing tropical birds, butterflies, insects, frogs, geckos, capuchin monkeys, and awe-inspiring sounds of howler monkeys. In the spirit of Costa Rican ecotourism, the nature surrounding Luna de Miel will make you feel like you are on the cover of a National Geographic magazine.
The house is the product of a special collaboration between a celebrated Belgian architect living in San Jose, a Costa Rican contractor renowned for building exquisite modern homes on the Pacific Heights Mountain, and a couple of educators from Los Angeles who first fell in love with Costa Rica on their honeymoon. The land where the house is situated was gifted to the couple, who have dedicated their lives and careers to helping low-income urban public schools. The playful bunk room was inspired by the couple’s three young daughters. This family values progress, community, and adventure which can be felt throughout the home’s design, artwork and furnishing.
Luna Miel has an area of 478 square meters, or 5,145 square feet. It’s protected by a gate with an access code.

Playa Potrero
Offering easy access to three beaches (Potrero, Penca and Prieta), this town combines upscale lodging options with the charm of a traditional Costa Rican town (think central plaza with church, school and soccer field).
There are plenty of restaurants, shops and other conveniences, and the downtown area has two mini supers (convenience stores), as well as a commercial plaza with a coffee shop, a hairdresser and other businesses.
Some of the liveliest nightlife in the region can be found at Las Brisas Bar, right on the beach, though it’s normally hopping only on Wednesdays (Ladies’ Night).
Potrero has several nice housing developments with “Villagio” in the name, popular among Italians and other expats. You can find Italian gelato shops, Costa Rican sodas (small, affordable restaurants) and hotels in a range of prices (Pitaya Lodge, Bahía La Esmeralda, Hotel Isolina, Bahía del Sol).
Just to the south of Potrero lie all the attractions of Surfside, and to the north is a beautiful, hilly drive along the ocean, ending at the Mediterranean-style village of Las Catalinas. Potrero is within easy striking distance of several beaches, and it’s a great base to explore the entire region — for a sampler of both the high-end and the humble.
Our dedicated agents are at your service, ready to assist you in securing a rental car, granting you the freedom to explore the area at your own pace. For short jaunts to nearby towns or beaches, golf carts are a popular choice for convenient mobility. Alternatively, you can opt for a bicycle to navigate the town and its surroundings.
In addition, we can arrange hassle-free airport transfers for your convenience. If you prefer the ease of having a rental car waiting for you at your property, we offer complimentary delivery services. Relax and enjoy the scenic drive from the airport to your destination in our private van.
While taxis are available, they may be somewhat challenging to find. Many locals rely on buses for transportation, although there is a limited selection of routes and schedules. Private shuttles are an excellent choice for reaching nearby destinations, and numerous tour companies offer transportation to and from their tours.
For your reference, our information brochure contains valuable details about local transportation options, points of interest, as well as contact information for taxi and shuttle services. Your exploration of the area just got a whole lot easier!
